Marvel has just begun setting the stage for its post-Avengers universe, though right now, all they’ve really confirmed are sequels. Furthermore, those sequels are very mysterious, as there have been very few details revealed about any of the upcoming films. Now, it seems Marvel’s President of Production Kevin Feige is ready to discuss the future, as he’s not only opened up about Thor 2, Captain America 2, and Iron Man 3, but also about Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, a new Hulk movie, and even a small tidbit about The Avengers 2.
Feige spoke in vast detail with Collider in an interview where he tackles the majority of the future projects for the Marvel future. Speaking with Steven Weintraub, the interview is certainly a monumental one, revealing plenty of information. Here are just the highlights:
– He’s seen an unfinished version of The Amazing Spider-Man and says it is excellent and should quiet concerns over the idea of rebooting the franchise.
– They have an option for Whedon to direct The Avengers 2 when and if the time comes.
– There are currently no plans to do a new Hulk movie with Mark Ruffalo.
– They should announce by Comic-Con or before what’s coming out in May 2014.
– Zak Penn did not write a Doctor Strange movie.
IRON MAN 3:
– Iron Man 3 starts filming in five weeks in North Carolina.
– When approaching Iron Man 3, their gut instinct was to not make it be a pseudo-Avengers 2. It’s a full-on Tony Stark movie.
-Iron Man 3 is inspired by the first half of Iron Man 1 in that they’re metaphorically putting Tony back in the cave. He’s stripped of everything, back against a wall, and has nothing but his intelligence to get him out.
THOR 2:
– Filming on Thor 2 begins in three months in London and it picks up where the first film left off in terms of Jane and Oden.
– Thor 2 also addresses what’s been happening in the nine realms with the Asgardians unable to use the Bifrost.
– Loki has a part in Thor 2, but there will be a different, big villain.
– The crux of Thor 2 is continuing the dynamic between Thor and Jane, as well as the relationship between Thor and Oden.
On the Marvel/Disney animated film rumors:
– Creative talks have been progressing for years between Marvel and Disney about possibly doing a Marvel property as an animated film.
EDGAR WRIGHT:
– Feige says, “depending on what Edgar Wright films for us” circumstances could possibly force them to make three films in one year.
– Edgar Wright did not film something for Marvel recently, but Feige says to pay attention to Wright’s tweets in the coming months “and that might change.”
CAPTAIN AMERICA 2:
– They’re still figuring out how much period flashbacks to include in Captain America 2.
– The primary story of Captain America 2 will be Steve Rogers figuring out his place in the world. For the time-being, he’ll be staying with S.H.I.E.L.D.

There’s certainly a lot to process here. So let’s tackle a few. With Loki not being the primary villain of Thor 2, there’s certainly an unknown element to who exactly it could be. I’m just throwing a name up in the air here, but with the evil brother at least playing a part, there’s a chance that one of the most human villains of Thor’s comic history Carl Creel, a.k.a. Absorbing Man, could step into the center spotlight. Loki plays a part in his creation, while Creel also challenges Odin, eventually battling Hulk, Black Widow, Captain America, and others later on. It could mean an appearance in a futureAvengers film, and it would effectively bring together the Asgardian characters.
The May 2014 release date is certainly still a very mysterious one. Here, Feige is obviously saying that Ant-Man won’t be in the 2014 slate (at least for now anyways), adding more fuel that the two competing films are either the Doctor Strangemovie, or the S.H.I.E.L.D. film that Neal McDonough hinted at early this year. There’s a chance that could change, as Feige said above, and it certainly sounds like Marvel wants Wright to do his superhero as soon as possible.
Finally, the fact Feige says that there are no plans for a Mark Ruffalo Hulk movie sounds like they could change. Out of last night’s press screening, it’s said that Ruffalo definitely stole some scenes, and wowed over a good portion of the crowd. If the wider public feels that same way, perhaps demand will be high enough to actually garner some interest. Third time could indeed be the charm in Marvel’s case.
