After a weekend so huge that even the estimates were off by significant margins, The Avengers raked in $207 million dollars in domestic box office sales this weekend. Hell, even yesterday the film managed to bring in another $19 million. With a mid-credits teaser sequence, along with Marvel’s Kevin Feige not exactly being quiet about The Avengers being just the first of a trilogy, it was always certain a sequel was coming. Now, Walt Disney Pictures has surprised absolutely no one by announcing we’ll get another superhero team-up in the near future.
The company has announced today The Avengers 2 is in development, with CEO Bob Iger not only pleased with the box office returns, but also how well the merchandise appears to be selling too. Unfortunately, there is currently no release date for the film, and there likely won’t be one for some time to come. Also, there is no indication if writer/director Joss Whedon will return either, but its a strong possibility.
The Avengers 2 joins a slate of features that are said to be in development, including Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, Captain America 2, Thor 2, Iron Man 3, and rumored projects that include a standalone Black Widow movie, a 2015 solo Hulk film, and the defense agency of S.H.I.E.L.D. even getting their own moment in the sun.
The past Marvel films have jumped into Amazon’s bestseller list in movies, while the graphic novel Infinity Gauntlet has done likewise in the books category. Today, The Avengers crossed $700 million worldwide in just 13 days of a global release, with a possible $1 billion crossing within the next week or two.
