The pumping soundtrack, the fabulous flapper costumes, Carey Mulligan wide-eyed and pretty-faced and, of course, Leonardo DiCaprio looking swoon-ingly dapper.
Ttuxedos, waistcoats and bow ties to play the snazzy millionaire and now it’s been revealed none other than Brooks Brothers are behind the costumes. According to WWD, the legendary brand have provided authentic re-creations of Twenties pieces for the latest rendition of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel — no less than 1,700 pieces, including neckwear, accessories AND shoes. Didn’t we tell you it’s going to be sartorial spectacle?

As the official men’s clothier to the film, the brand (which is the oldest men’s clothier chain in the US, dontcha know) worked closely with Catherine Martin, who is not only an Academy Award-winning costume designer but also Mr Luhrmann’s wife. Aww! And that means Leo’s co-stars Tobey Maguire (who plays Nick Carraway) and Joel Edgerton (who plays Tom Buchanan) are kitted out in Brooks Bros.

‘It was this most basic and fundamental connection that has made our collaboration so authentic,’ Catherine says. ‘Brooks Brothers is mentioned several times in Fitzgerald’s writings as a representation of the ultimate gentleman’s purveyor of fine clothing to the American man of distinction.’ Just check out these dashing classics for more proof.
Catherine went through a painstakingly thorough process to ensure that Roaring Twenties aesthetic was spot on for her hubby’s film. From trawling through zillions of photos to sourcing original ads, catalogues and fabrics, we can only imagine the gems she must have uncovered. And judging from the sneak peeks of Leo et all working the wonderful wardrobe, all her hard work has paid off.
