Universal Delays ‘The Bourne Legacy’ One Week Due To Tough Competition

While the summer hasn’t nearly been as great as some box office analysts were predicting earlier this year, we’ve had some modest hits, and with plenty of anticipated features to come including The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man,Total Recall, and more. One of the blockbusters also gaining a decent amount of buzz happens to be The Bourne Legacy, the next installment in the franchise that focuses on new character Aaron Cross and the same position he’s thrust in following Bourne’s New York City mayhem in the last film. Television spots have just begun to air as a marketing push for the film is under way, but it seems Universal Pictures is shaking in their boots just a bit. Now, the studio has revealed that they will be delaying the film by just a short while.

Universal announced The Bourne Legacy will now hit theaters on August 10th rather than August 3rd due to very stiff competition in The Dark Knight Rises and Total Recall. Now, the film will face off against R-rated comedy The Campaign, with Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, where it stands much better of a chance.

And honestly, can you blame Universal? After the bomb that was Battleship domestically, and a similar small win in the States for Snow White and the Huntsman, the studio only has R-rated comedy Ted and The Bourne Legacy to lean on for better numbers. With The Dark Knight Rises obviously going to be strong for multiple weeks, it’s best to distance itself from the film as much as possible in order to come in with the strong premiere. While Total Recall could easily dethrone the DC Comics giant, Universal would rather have the PG-13 spin-off stand tall on its own rather than against two hot films that may just gain positive word of mouth.

The only question is whether or not the film is actually good. While the full-length trailer certainly had people talking, might Universal be worrying that negative reviews against two other hot films may push audiences away from the next Bourne feature? It’s a stretch, but its certainly a possible scenario.

The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy. The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films. For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.
