Joss Whedon updates on Avengers 2

It’s been a while since we heard an update from Joss Whedon on Avengers 2, but the main man has been talking to MTV about all things concerning Marvel’s next raft of movies.

“Don’t go bigger; go deeper,” he says of Avengers 2. “All of these people have met, so you have that out of the way. Now you can spend your time just digging in – and by digging in, I mean with a scalpel, to cause pain.”

As for the rest of Phase 2, Whedon confirms that he’s keeping a watchful eye on developments.

“I read all the scripts and I give notes on everything,” says Whedon. “I’ll look at cuts when they’re ready to show me. I’ll talk to directors if they want to. I try to make myself useful without being intrusive. I’ve gotten to be a part of all of them. That’s a dream job for a kid like me.”

And then there’s also the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show to look forward to…

“You have to bring a bit of spectacle to it,” says Whedon. “It’s got to be bigger than your average cop show. But at the end of the day, it’s about the peripheral people. It’s about the people on the edges of the grand adventures. The whole point of the show is that even with all these big things, the little things matter.”

“It’s about people who don’t have super powers. There will be some people with powers, there will be FX, and there will be the spectacle of science-fiction storytelling – but all played on a very human, small level. That’s the appeal of the thing.”

The Avengers 2 opens in the UK on 1 May 2015.

Marvel Phase Two comprises every Marvel film in the current wave of movies, up to and including Avengers 2. Well, you’ve got to plan ahead with superhero epics.

And Marvel’s second phase should have plenty to delight, whether you’re a comic-book movie buff or just a fan of Chris Evans or Scarlett Johansson in a superhero costume.

The series of films includes Iron Man 3Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians Of The Galaxy, and (possibly) Ant-Man, and will culminate in The Avengers 2, which opens in the UK on 1 May 2015.

There’s also the possibility of a solo Hulk movie for Mark Ruffalo, but probably not before The Avengers 2.

Iron Man 3 will be directed by Shane Black and will see the return of Robert Downey Jr. The film will also star Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall and James Badge Dale, while Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow will not be appearing.

Iron Man 3 opens in the UK on 26 April 2013.

Thor 2 is being directed by Alan Taylor and will star Chris Hemsworth as Thor, who’ll be joined once again by Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston and Kat Dennings. New entries in the cast include Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost) and Christopher Eccleston. Rumours are also hinting at a cameo for Doctor Strange, who just might be played by Viggo Mortensen. The film aims to cover the entire Nine Realms.

Thor: The Dark World opens in the UK on 8 November 2013.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and will feature deleted scenes from The Avengers.

The film will star Chris Evans as Captain America, and Anthony Mackie will also be part of the cast as Falcon. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow will make a cameo appearance but the choice of a love interest for Captain America threw up plenty of options.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens in the US on 4 April 2014.

Guardians Of The Galaxy will be part of Marvel Phase Two, with James Gunn re-writing and directing it, and it opens in the US on 1 August 2014.

And last but not least, the superhero Ant-Man will eventually reach the big screen too, with a film directed by Edgar Wright. An official date release has not been given yet, so it might not make it into Phase Two.
