As we gear up for 2013, one of the most beloved sci-fi series of all time Doctor Who gets ready to mark a major milestone as the franchise celebrates its 50th Anniversary. With the anniversary also came a number of intriguing rumors over the past year that have included a number of past faces returning, Matt Smith possibly regenerating into a new 12th Doctor and even the return of The Master while most of them have been shot down or were strictly rumor. But if there was anyone more ambitious to return after years of demand from fans, it’s the 10th Doctor himself David Tennant. Now, it seems that rumor may just have become a reality as a new report claims that Tennant is set to make the celebration a little wibbly wobbly timey wimey.
Bleeding Cool reports a source has revealed that Tennant is in fact set in stone to appear in the 50th Anniversary. The source tells the reliable site, “Yes. David Tennant will be back in time for the Doctor Who anniversary. Be prepared to be surprised…” We have yet to hear the news offically from BBC, so of course this should taken with a grain of salt for now.
On top of this, the source also claims “[Showrunner and writter Steven] Moffat has apparently been laying the groundwork for the anniversary storyline for some time” and that “there will be two anniversary specials for the show”. One of those specials are set to be a real-life tale which details the creation of the series itself and the struggle to get the sci-fi series on the air, with no casting information yet available for a Fall 2013 premiere.
Another anniversary special makes sense, as we still have the final episodes of Series 7 to get through, which are rumored to kick off in April. It’s unlikely Series 8 will premiere any time before the 2013 Christmas special, but an additional anniversary special may just be the bridge we need until another season kicks off in what seems to be Spring 2014.
The big question now remains: how will Tennant appear? Will Ten and Eleven meet on-screen, somehow serving as a sequel of sorts into Moffat’s previous penned crossover special “Time Crash”? Only time will tell…
In the meantime, Doctor Who returns Christmas Day at 9PM with “The Snowmen” on BBC America.
